Johan de Villiers moved to Singapore in 2011, as regional division manager of the Power Systems division in South-East Asia. In 2015 Johan was promoted to Managing Director for ABB in Singapore, with oversight over the South-East Asian countries. During 2019 ABB changed to a business-led organization and Johan was appointed as Head of Industrial Automation business in South-East Asia, in addition to his role as Managing Director.
Following an education in electrical and electronic engineering, Johan gained practical experience in engineering, commissioning and project management, followed by various business leadership roles which helped him further develop his technical and management related skills.
Johan joined ABB in 1997 in South Africa, where he successfully developed and led various teams in the areas of grid automation, manufacturing automation as well as industrial electrification & control. In 2005, Johan was leading the Process Automation and Robotics divisions in South Africa. In 2007, he was appointed Country Manager for ABB in Qatar, where he helped multiply the business, significantly expanding the workforce and setting up new partnerships and joint ventures. Johan has also been directly involved in driving ABB’s substations business across the Arabian Gulf Countries, working on projects exceeding $1 billion in total. Johan has a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, as well as an MBA. He is a member of the Singapore government’s Future Economy Council manufacturing sub-committee and serves on the board of the EU-ASEAN Business Council. He is also an advisor to consultative committees at National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and serves on the boards of several ABB legal entities and joint ventures.
